By | September 18, 2015

Initial SUSDB.mdf file after a virgin installation was 8,340KB

During the initial setup of WSUS it goes away and downloads update information from Microsoft Update (You press Start Connecting and wait quite a while). After this process completes, but before you pressed next the size of SUSDB.mdf was 35,008 KB.

Warning : As of 18-09-2015 I’ve not used this to fix a bloated WSUS server, but the next one I come accross it is my attention to

  • Stop the Update Services service.
  • Empty the contents of \WSUS\WsusContent
  • Restore this backup of the SUSDB database
  • Start the Update Services service.
  • See what happens (initial configuration hopefully?!)

If you do this before I do, please let me know how you get on.

Warning: this is an unsupported procedure. If you do it, you’re doing it at your own risk.

After pressing next you ….

Configured one server and one workstation to use WSUS and they turned up in the WSUS console as computers with “no status”.

Ran “wuauclt /reportnow” (taking on board https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/19b5f65e-1418-463c-90bf-dffa9469effa/wuauclt-commands-to-force-reporting-of-status?forum=winserverwsus) and waited 30minutes.

Checked again in the morning, and them had a percentage installed.

Re-ran WsusSmartApprove now I had computers registered and it approved some updates (presumably ones the machines needed).
